Frequently Asked Questions
How does Freedom Home School work?
Freedom Home School is an Independent Study School within Golden Valley Unified School District. We provide students in grades K-12 the opportunity to learn at home using award winning online curriculum, but with the added support of the District's teachers. At Freedom Home School, students get one-on-one time with a grade-appropriate teacher who will review work, provide support to students and parents, and be a steady, positive presence in your child's education.
How much time will my student need to spend on school work each day?
Much like a traditional school, your student can plan on spending at least 4-6 hours a day on school work. However, with Freedom Home School you have the flexibility to work at a time that best fits your schedule.
What role will I, as the parent/guardian, play in my students' education?
Freedom Home School is an Independent Study School designed for students who have the ability and drive to work independently. However, support at home is very important for a student's success in our program. You will be expected to encourage your student to do more than the minimum study requirements each day, and to participate in weekly meetings and enrichment classes. For students in grades K-5, it is also necessary for a parent/guardian to be available to work with your student actively throughout their coursework as the assigned Guardian. You can be expected to:
- Guide your student through the lesson as needed
- Discuss the concepts being taught
- Assist with interactive tools and games
- Oversee assignments
- Help facilitate hands-on learning that may be in the course
- Check for understanding of assignments
- Keep your student on schedule and pace
- Communicate with the teacher as needed
What are the benefits of Freedom Home School?
There are many benefits to attending Freedom Home School including:
- Online curriculum, student/parent support and tutoring
- Weekly meetings with a credentialed teacher
- Bi-Weekly enrichment days
- Flexible education that supports your families goals
- The opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities offered throughout GVUSD like sports, music, art, and field trips.
- WASC accreditation for High School
- A-G courses and over 70 electives for High School
Why should I choose Freedom Home School over an On-line School?
Your child's education is important! Some children need a little extra help while others are able to advance quickly. Purely online schools lack the personalized support for students and face-to-face access to a credentialed teacher.
